Horses Provide a Powerful Reflection

Trails uses horses based on effective equine therapy strategies to help troubled teens and youth connect with their emotions and nonverbal communication. As our Equine Specialist will tell you, “You can’t hide your feelings from a horse.”Using an Equine Therapy approach helps teens overcome their issues and reconnect with their families. Trails Carolina’s equine specialist can help create these changes for you.

Horses immediately sense strong emotion and provide instant, honest feedback. We encourage our students to use their relationship with a horse as a lens to see themselves and how they affect the relationships around them and start to develop tools to help get their needs met in a healthy way.

Better than any other animal, horses can teach teens and youth the lesson that, emotionally and socially, give them the personal insight as to how their behavior not only hasn’t worked in real time with the horse, but likely with their family.

A certain stance, tone of voice, or facial expression can communicate volumes to these intuitive animals. Since most of the interaction between a human and a horse occurs non-verbally, our equine therapy specialist helps our students connect to their strong feelings and helps them better vocalize their emotions and experiences and gives invaluable lesson into what behavioral skills have and have not been working for them outside of trails.

With a horse, students are not expected to talk so much as they are expected to show behavior and lead the horse as they would try to elicit behavior through interacting with others, family, siblings etc…

Consequently, horses train students toward awareness and eventually control over internal states. The communication skills required for working with a horse directly translate into the necessary wilderness training and communication skills necessary for better communication with their families, peers, teachers, peers and other important relationships.
