Wilderness Therapy: Evidence-Based Approach To Helping Troubled Youth

Trails Carolina's wilderness therapy programs for families from Connecticut are designed to serve the immediate and long-term needs of students and their families.

Having a family-focused and evidence-based approach has been shown across mental illnesses and behavioral health issues to not only implement the primary goal of treating our students but also to re-establish the foundation necessary to move forward.

Trails Carolina, wilderness therapy for families from Connecticut, helps the whole family understand what’s going on with their child and helps provide a future environment for healthy lines of communication so that the entire family can advocate for their needs, get them met, and come to healthy solutions.

Founding Trails Carolina

Graham Shannonhouse established Trails Carolina in 2008 to deliver upon the promise of wilderness therapy—to create lasting change in the behaviors of teens.

Recognizing that the reach of treatment needs to include the family, our program creates individual treatment plans based on the whole family.

Segmented Peer Groups & Individualized Treatment

Groups are single-gender and separated by age and type of issue. Trails Carolina, wilderness therapy for families from Connecticut, is “open enrollment,” meaning that students in various stages of the process live together in the same group, with new children entering the program all the time and graduates exiting.

This is a main piece of both creating a smooth admission into the program and also maintaining a consistent positive peer culture so that the group can be instrumental in supporting each other through the program.

While the students in each group have similar or overlapping issues, we also recognize that no two kids are the same, and no two families are the same. As such a “one size fits all” model cannot be considered to successfully treat an entire population even with similar issues.

Wilderness Therapy Transitions

Between wilderness expeditions, students reside at our base camp where they apply their wilderness lessons to different people, places and environments. This ability to transition their skills and experiences to new situations and environments helps students develop practical, real-life skills for when they graduate the program.

Family Programming

In addition, our wilderness therapy for families from Connecticut created a family program that outshines the rest, and we ask our students’ parents to commit to the process. The work that families do with our designated family therapist parallels what their child is doing and experiencing in our program.  In this way, we work to address the behaviors of troubled teens and empower parents to make the best choices for their children.
