We Help Your Child Get Back On Track

Video Game Addiction Help For Struggling Teens

No parent wants to see their child struggle with a behavioral or emotional challenge. A video game addiction can be harmful to a child’s overall well-being and potential for future success. At Trails Carolina wilderness therapy, we can provide the help your child struggling with a video game addiction needs.

During our wilderness therapy program, your teen will be completely removed from their familiar environment. They will be away from the video games they can’t stop playing and all of the electronics that may tempt them.

Out in nature, your teen will be able to focus on their own personal growth and success. At Trails, we help teens and their families understand what is causing the video game addiction and create a therapeutic plan for teens to overcome their video game addiction.

Our wilderness therapy program, designed for teens 10-17, is dedicated to helping teens work through behavioral or emotional difficulties, build trusting relationships with their family and peers, and achieve academic success.

Getting your teen away from their video game consoles and into the real world can be a difficult process, especially if they have an addiction to video games. At Trails Carolina, we utilize evidence-based approaches for families struggling with this issue.

Here are a few ways Trails Carolina helps video game-addicted teens:

  1. Removal from technology: At Trails, teens do not have access to technology. Instead, they have the opportunity to interact with others face-to-face. Much of our programming is geared toward improving social skills and interactions with others.
  2. Boosts self-esteem and self-confidence: Often, teens turn to video games to escape the real world. This is often due to low self-esteem. At Trails, our adventure activities and accredited academics help teens believe in themselves again.
  3. Focus on Transitions: Every aspect of our programming is designed to ensure lasting success long after a student graduates from Trails. We utilize transitions throughout our programming to practice carrying over therapeutic lessons within multiple settings.
  4. Accredited Academics: Often, teens who are addicted to video games get behind in school. We help to get your teen back on the right track. Trails Carolina’s accredited academic program provides a personalized academic plan for each student. Students are given the opportunity to learn in more hands-on settings, as well as traditional classroom settings. All credits transfer to make the transition from Trails run smoothly.

Everything we do at Trails Carolina is meant to prepare students and families to transition their wilderness experience into the real world and create a bright future.

Breaking The Tech Addiction Cycle

It is hard to imagine a world without technology; especially phones, video games, and social media. They are pervasive and touch almost every aspect of our daily lives with the hope of making us more efficient while creating more opportunities for enjoyment and entertainment. Often, however, we can become reliant and even addicted to technology to the point where it becomes a crutch. This can be especially dangerous during the developing years when our brains and bodies are in constant flux.

For young people, technology can also become a part of their general coping and avoidance technique, affecting their ability to make meaningful connections with peers. This can exacerbate underlying problems such as anxiety and depression. One of our goals at Trails Carolina is to intervene during these crucial years of development, breaking the cycle of tech addiction, and helping to establish healthy boundaries and behavior with technology.

Trails Carolina's wilderness therapy programs use the natural environment to reset a student’s receptors and relationship with technology. After just a few days away from phones, video games, and social media; students often begin to gain insight into how unproductive and isolated these technologies have made them.

Our wilderness setting is an ideal environment to reset and withdraw from the stresses of technology. Our students benefit from tremendous therapeutic and peer support. They are able to explore and engage in new passions that replace other maladaptive behaviors that stem from dependence on technology such as poor sleep patterns, inactivity, and procrastination.

Creating A Roadmap To Recovery

Without distractions like phones, social media, and video games, a student is able to build real strategies that allow them to see who they really are, strengthen their emotional intelligence and communication skills in addition to helping them identify real and meaningful relationships.

“If you feel more confident and capable of interacting socially in person then you are going to be more likely to seek connections with peers in that way. Students develop strengths without tech and forever understand how they can be without,” explains Primary Therapist Justin Messinger.

At Trails Carolina, a student can reset and redefine their relationship with technology, ultimately, strengthening the transition back into the home and school life.
